160 years passed by since the first passenger train in India moved on the tracks.
Google Doodle for today (16-04-2013) is reminding us about the first train journey way back in 1853. Even though the first railway line was set up in 1832, only in 1853 the railway tracks were used for passenger transportation.
In 1853-54, two companies Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR) and East Indian Railway (EIR), were created for transportation purpose. GIPR was asked to setup near Mumbai, and EIR was to setup a railway line near Kolkata.
While I personally thank Google for reminding us about our railway history, let me remind you Google, that the steam engines are seen only in museums now a days. Being in the modern era, a better fit would have been the use of Metro rails which is getting popularity in India.
What are your memories about the train journeys in India
WordPress is a preferred blogging as well as web platform for millions of people / organizations across the world. WordPress is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this month. With the recent botnet attacks on WordPress websites, this article would help you in changing the “admin” username.
In the initial days of WordPress, it did not allow users to change the default “admin” username during the installation. However, from version 3.0 of WordPress you could choose a custom username instead of the default “admin”. However, many of us used to choose the bad old “admin” username as the default username.
One of the first thing a hacker try when they want to access a WordPress site is to use the username “admin”. So lets change it. Now, the challenge is that WordPress would not allow you to change the username, so we will have to use a work around to achieve this.
Here is the step by step process for changing the WordPress admin username
1. Login to your WordPress site as Administrator user
2. Create a new user account using the WordPress dashboard
3. Create the new user account adding relevant information
You cannot create another user with the same email address. If you want to use the same email address, then repeat this process once again after deleting the current WordPress user account.
Also ensure that you have selected the administrator role for the new user created.
4. Logout from the current session
5. Login to your WordPress site using the newly created administrator account
6. Go to the “All Users” in the “Users” menu. Here you will find both administrator accounts.
7. Delete the “admin” user account. It will give you the below message
Click on the “Confirm Deletion” button.
This will delete your default administrator account. It will transfer all posts to your newly created user account thus you will have the control on all those posts you created earlier.
Recently, a new botnet is focusing on the WordPress installations worldwide. It is been found that the primary method of their attack is some thing called brute force attack.
The key target of this attack is to gain access to the WordPress installation using the “admin” username among many. The botnet performs login attempts using the username “admin” and password from a number of common used passwords and dictionary words. If any of the random passwords they tried matches with your “admin” username then the attack is successful.
What are the preventive measures?
There are various recommendations and plugins around to protect the WordPress websites from this botnet attack. I would recommend these basic and easy steps to be taken before any other action.
- If you are still using “admin” username for blogging or administration of your WordPress site, change your WordPress admin username to a more human name such as “Karan” or “Rajesh”
- Make strong passwords for your administrator user accounts as well as other user accounts.
These two simple steps can protect your website to a great extent and put you ahead of other websites.
Do you have an unlimited bandwidth on your phone? Then this post is not for you. for others, lets explore the possibilities of reducing the bandwidth overage problems.
Often the 3G bandwidth or 4G bandwidth you have subscribed would be just enough for browsing mobile friendly websites and emails. It may not be suitable for video or high bandwidth applications. Here are some tips for you, if you are worried about the mobile data caps.
Operating System Updates
The operating system, be it iOS or Android, let those updates happen only over WiFi instead of 3G.
Download and update of Mobile Apps takes a huge amount of data transfer when it comes to 3G bandwidth. To save 3G bandwidth, you might want to perform this activity while you are in a WiFi network.
Opera Mini browser can help you reduce the bandwidth usage as the browser compresses the webpages before they are sent to your mobile. Additionally, you can also use the mobile websites instead of the normal desktop compatible websites.
Video calling services like Skype, Google Plus etc are for WiFi. It is estimated that video calls take 6 times bandwidth than voice calls.
Many services such as Google Plus comes with automatic photo upload feature where the application is by default set to upload photos while connected to internet, irrespective of 3G or WiFi. Change the default settings of these applications so that the uploads will happen only when connected to a WiFi network
YouTube and Video sites
I have watched YouTube videos on 3G and resulted in bandwidth overage. Many of us are keep doing it. Now if you are worried about data caps, you should stop watching videos using 3G.
It is advisable to use some bandwidth monitoring apps on your mobile which will keep a track of your 3G data usage. This would help you get some indications of your usage and where you stand in a billing cycle. If you are about to meet your limit, then this last tip could give some help.
Automatic Email check to Manual checks
Change your email checking from push to manual. This is bit of an irritation, but can help you from overage charges.
The key change is not in your phone, but within you. Your behaviour towards the use of apps and data can save some cash for you.

This is a security flaw in the Android phone’s from Samsung Phone, which allows an malicious user to bypass the security controls and get access to any app – even when the phone is "securely" locked with a pattern, PIN, password, or face detection.
Terence Eden found this weakness in the Samsung Android Phones. To bypass the screen lock in Samsung android phones like Galaxy S, Note etc.. you need to use a series of key press and issue some commands
According to Terence Eden, this flaw does not occur in stock Android from Google, but on in Samsung flavour of Android phones.
You might be able to reduce the time of display (yes, those flash seconds) which will increase the efforts of an attacker. This might help the attacker stop trying and thus will keep your phone safe
